Junichiro Sano

Mr. Junichiro Sano serves as the Senior Advisor to Dalton and has had an extensive career in the financial services industry.  Mr. Sano started his career with Nikko Securities in 1978, where he served as the institutional sales manager in its New York office for major institutional investors in the U.S.  After returning to Tokyo from New York in 1989, Mr. Sano assumed the role as the manager of the CEO office in the headquarters.  In 1999, Mr. Sano joined Nikko Citigroup Securities, created as a result of the merger among Nikko, Salmon Smith Barney, Travelers Group, and Citi Group.  He served as the managing director of the equity division, as well as a regional head of the Global Sales Committee of Citigroup and a representing member of the diversity committee of Citigroup.


He started working for Dalton Investments in 2006 and also served as the President of Dalton Investments KK in Tokyo.


In addition, he was on the Board of Directors of Nipponkoa Insurance, currently called Sompo Holdings, from 2008 to 2012.  He currently sits on the Steering Committee and serves the Chief Liaison Officer of the Japan Association of Corporate Directors (JACD).


Mr. Sano played a major role in promoting the “Modern Portfolio Theory” to the Japanese investment community.  He firstly introduced passive products such as the index fund and the hedge fund strategy to the Japanese investment community.  He also helped creating several joint ventures of the “Quant’s investment group” with Wells Fargo, Barra and Dr. W. Sharpe of Stanford University.


Mr. Sano earned his BA in Business Administration from Kwansei Gakuin University. He also completed the course for International Bankers post-graduate study at London School of Economics and Political Science in 1983.
